Mr John H. Wallacy, of Lancaster, claims to have been the first to put a “ white line ” on a road in England. He chalked a white line outside his house at Hornby, on the main Bradford-Morecambe road, in 1916. after there had' been a collision between two farm carts. Soon afterwards lie was warned that he would gel iu serious trouble if lie did not stop putting marks on the King’s highway. Three rears later, in 1919. he received a letter from King George V. complimenting him on ills ‘’brainwave.” and in 1921 1m wrs offered malarias by the atn li'v il :es, to maintain ills while line lor all tune!
