MEDICAL ADVERTISEMENTS ACT.
ro the unison Sir,— It is not often that your readers are favoured with such an amusing letter as ml provided by ” A Business Man ” in Tuesday's ‘ Star’ Surely lie must be proiitalilv engaged in the business aimed al in Hie Bill of unloading patent nostrums on a credulous public, since leading chemists, doctors, and even politicians of opposing political opinions nre_unanimous in favour of it. The doctors, too, arc hardly likely to feel llatlered by H lc suggestion that when they arc too busy a bottle of “ medicine ’’ is an effective substitute for their ministrations. Since the Government’s own’ commercial radio is likely to be a heavier loser than the newspapers, your, correspondent’s belief I hat. the Bill is n left-handed blow at them is singularly unconvincing. To their credit, be it said, they are unlikely to lose much. While listening to the debate on the Bill the writer was convinced that a Bill of one danse only would have been just as effective—that all preparations bear a report from a Government analyst indicating the nature of the contents and their value for the purpose they were offered for. Not many would be sold after that. Your correspondent is advised to read a book, ‘ Poisons, Potions, and Profits: An Antidote to Radio Advertising ’ (Morrell). Then if he is still opposed lo the Bill, will he write again and tell ns? f am, etc., Anti-Nostrum. October £2.
