SHORTER SHIRTS
STANDARD CLOTHES IN AUSTRALIA SYDNEY, October 21. The standardisation of men’s and boys’ shirts and pyjamas has been announced by the Minister for War Organisation of industry. Mr J. J. Dedman. Men’s shirts will be cut three inches shorter in the front and from three to five inches at the ‘ back, according to the wearer’s size. Included in the new standardised shirt styles is a short open-fronted eoat-shirt to be worn,'as a coat in hot weather. It can be worn with or without a tie, and its length is restricted to 24in. Other coat style shirts and double cuffs are prohibited. Based on pre-war production figures the elimination of double cuffs and the shortening of the length of shirts would mean that 250,000 additional shirts could be made from the same amount of cloth, said the Minister.
VICHY DENIAL BASES FOR AXIS SUBMARINES VICHY, October 20. “ Several important British newspapers last week published more or less sensational reports that Axis submarines were finding facilities __ in French West Indies and French West Africa, or were being supplied from French ships off the African coast,’ says a navy communique. “ The French Admiralty is not going to attempt to deny all the falsehoods of this nature, but, in view of the extent of the false reports • referred to, it again declares that all are without the slightest foundation.”
