ANIMAL WELFARE

Keen appreciation of the notice taken of the animal welfare week schools’ essay competition was expressed by members of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at yesterday afternoon’s meeting. The number of essays received in the competition was 101, made up of 13 in the junior' section, 78 in the intermediate, and 10 senior. A number of letters from schools and ministers of religion were read at the meeting, all speaking of the good that had been accomplished. The chairman, Mr Crosby Morris remarked that he did not know when the society had ever received so many satisfactory replies. The essays are to be judged as soon as possible, but it is anticipated that it will be a week at least before the results are known. Reference to a recent advertisment in the Press for 500 cats to be purchased at 4s each for transportation to Alexandra, where it was proposed to use them to catch rabr bits, brought two letters of protest to the society—one from the kindred Timaru body. The cruelty in turning out a domesticated cat into rough country was stressed at the meeting. The inspector was instructed to interview the Otago Acclimatisation Society and report to the next meeting ou the action which it was taking in the matter, Timaru to he, advised accordingly.
