RACING
[By Sr. Claiu.J News and Views. Mr F. C. Christie has five horses in work on the Orari tracks. They are Prince Shad, Pioneer, Silver Mask, Old Glory, and Greek Idol. It was bad luck for his owner that Palfrey went lame early this week. He is one of the most promising stayers trained at Riccarton, and but for this lameness would nave been engaged in the New Zealand Cup. Tea for Two, engaged in the weight-for-age race at Gore on Saturday, is a three-year-old filly by Salmagundi from Tea Party, and is thus a half-sister to the speedy but disappointing Music Hali. Silver Sox, runner-up to Damascus in the Spring Stakes at Washdyke, carries the same colours as Silver Streak, and is trained by T. Hobbs at Oamaru for Mr Aubrey. He is a three-year-old by Salmagundi from the Paper Money mare Silver Sail.
A very wide circle of friends will extend their deepest sympathy to Mr W. F. James and his family on the death of Ills wife, which occurred yesterday. The deceased lady had been an invalid for many years The acceptances for the Gore meeting on Saturday are a little disappointing, but one or two trainers were unable to secure riders for their horses. Lady Don, Gnohill. Lord Midas, Dark Colleen, Night Pal. and Gay Lancer have been paid up for in two races during the afternoon. The committee of the Pakuranga Hunt decided to fine the jockey F. E. Baker £6 for riding in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup Steeplechase while not the holder, of a jockey’s license for the current season, 1942-43.
Though both Strip and Boloyna were accepted for at the first day of the Wellington meeting neither will make the Boloyna raced much below his trainer’s expectations at Washdyke on Saturday. Strip will now take his place in the field for the principal handicap ait Gore. The death occurred at his residence, Gore, on Sunday of Mr M. R. Lawlor, one of the best-known and respected pioneer residents of the district. Deceased was one of the foundation members of the Gore Racing Club, and had been a member of the executive of the club for over 30 years. The dam of Keewah, winner of the Washdyke Harness Handicap last Saturday, is Native Queen, who held a mile record of 2mhi 10 l-Sscc. In addition to Keewah. Native Queen also left Maltravcrs and Chelidon. For her win Keewah has been penalised 48yds in both of the races she is engaged in at Greymouth ou Labour Day. Scottish Dale will have a strong following in the Shorts Handicap at Treuthara on Saturday with 7.13 to carry. She had to jump over one of the fallen liorses at Washdyke in her race on Saturday and lost several lengths. Over the last furlong and a-half she showed remarkable speed, after being one of the last to leave the barrier from a very ragged start. The Oamaru Trotting Club ’has received excellent acceptances ifor its meeting on Labour Day. In the Hannan Memorial Handicap the following New Zealand Cup candidates have been paid up for: —Bayard, Colonel Grattan, Dusky Sound, Fremont, Loyal Rev, Great Jewel, Peter Smith, Gold Bar, and Pine Art. The first race has been timed to start at 12,15 p.m.
For lier win at tile South Canterbury meeting Scottish Air was penalised 48yds, but did not accept. It is worthy of note that this improving young pacer has been engaged in the Invercargill Trotting Cup to be decided at the end of this month. Though she has only won over a mile and a-half, the manner in which she has finished in her races suggests that she will not find two miles too tar for her.
, Last year the Gore spring meeting was a two days’ fixture, and the milo and ■i-quarter race was run on- the second day. Night Pal, 8.10, won fairly, comfortably from Heidelberg, 7.7, and Duublcack, B.S, in 2min 8 1-Ssec. That was the last race that Night Pal won, and he has now dropped in the handicap to 7.10. Night Pal was finishing on strongly at the end of .the Telegraph Handicap at Wingatut early this month, and has since been working attractively on the tracks. He has been paid up for in both the mile and a-quarter and six furlong races next Saturday, and if started in the longer race is likely to be one of the best fancied. A cable from Melbourne states that after liis poor display in the Caulfield Stakes last Saturday Velocity heartened his Cup admirers by running a brilliant mile and a-quarter in 2min on the Mentone track yesterday. The difficulty of obtaining a light-weight rider for Amazed in the Cup has been overcome by C. Sanderson being released from a prior engagement to ride Watchguard. Skipton look Imin 49sec to' run a mile yesterday. His Cup supporters are somewhat anxious, a? he has not been seriously tried since his win in the Stand Handicap, but his trainer, J. Fryer, maintains that Skipton is better now than at any period of his career.
