CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
PILLAGING LOSSES The monthly meeting of the council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. The president (Mr C E. Begg) occupied the chair. The Chairman reported that no reply had yet been received to representations made to the Minister in Charge of the Police regarding the question of pillaging on the wharves throughout New Zealand. He thought, Mr Begg said, that the council of tho chamber should press for a reply. The extent to which pillaging was being carried on in the Dominion had caused a considerable stir among the business community, and if the matter were allowed to die down now nothing would be achieved,
It was decided to write again to the Associated Chambers asking that the representations should be renewed. REHABILITATION.
The Executive Committee reported that a reply had been received from the Rehabilitation Board stating that the .question of establishing, a training centre for disabled returned soldiers in Dunedin was receiving consideration .by the board. Delegates from the chamber had attended conferences with the Civil Ee-establishmont League and the Manufacturers’ Association., Various schemes were under consideration, including irrigation, afforestation, and the absorption of men in industry. The Chairman, who had acted as a delegate from the chamber, said that, provided the plans which had been prepared were approved, there v.iL a good chance of a training centre being established in Dunedin. The probable cost would be about £20,000. Particular attention had been paid at the conferences to afforestation, which, it was felt, would give the right class of employment to men who desired an openair occupation. Tile report was approved.
