SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
(Own Correspondent.) Schools Sports.—The annual championship sports under the auspices of the South Otago Primary Schools Sports Association were held at Balclutha on Saturday under ideal weather conditions. There were large entries in all events and good attendance of the public. The shield for aggregate points was won by Kailangata and Clutha Valley Schools, which were equal with 671, points, while Toko, and Stirling were run-ners-up with 55 points each, ami take the cup. The cup for tabloid events was won by Port Molyneux and Waiwera, with 79 points, Toko, and Benhar being equal second with 69 points, and Waiwera next with 68 points. ' ... Inquest.—The adjourned inquest into the death of Leslie Godsall Wilson, who died on September 22 as a result of injuries received while working in a quarry at.the New Snowdrift Lime Company’s works at Milburn on April 16, was concluded at Milton on Friday before Mr H. J. Dixon, coroner. Mr 11. M. Rutherford represented the widow and family, Mr 0. G. Stevens the insurance company, and Mr T. McMillan, inspector of mines and quarries, the department. Evidence was given by A, J. Sellars (who was working m the quarry with deceased) and J. G. Allan, foreman. This showed that deceased had been removing surface clay on a bench in the quarry, when there was a fall of earth, including a.lump weighing about 2cwt. This knocked him oil the bench and he fell some distance, being severely injured. The Coroner said the evidence was quite qlear as to- how the accident happened and returned a verdict that deceased met his death through being struck by a fall of earth in the quarry in which he was working. Scottish Society.—The monthly social of Bruce Scottish Society was well attended, and an enjoyable programme was given by
Messrs I. McDonald, A. Muir, J. Marshall, W. Taylor, Misses G. Robinson, G. Clark, C. Contts, A. E. Vallis, Mrs V. Reach, and Miss J. Fiddcs. Chief J. Campbell presided. Bowling.—The Kaitangata Club opened the season on Saturday, there being a good attendance, including visitors from Balclutha and Stirling. In' the absence of the president, Mr T. Crook declared the season open, and an enjoyable afternoon was spent. The Milton ladies opened the season last week, Mrs M. E. Paul declaring the season open and rolling the -first bowl. Fool ball.—-The Crescent Club held an on(joyahle smoke social as a wind-up to the season on Saturday night. Mr N. Gallagher presided over a good attendance. It was suggested that, in the event of cricket clubs not functioning this season, football clubs arrange for cricket teams and play matches, thus keeping members together. It is quite probable that at least four teams will be available. Golf.—The Balclutha Club closed the season on Saturday. Mr T. M. Thomson, in the absence of the president, referred to the deaths of Mrs R. R. Grigor and Miss C. Grant. Mixed foursomes over 10 holes were played, the winners being F. Landrebe and Mrs Egarr, Competitions for the day were won by Mrs Baxter and Mrs Anderson. Trophies won during the season were presented to Mrs L. Moffat, ladies* A grade chamnionship. Wednesday ringer and Saturday ringer-, Mrs A. Aitken, L.G..U. bronze medal and Miss Grant’s trophy: eclectic competition (Mrs Egarr’s trophy), Mrs L. Allan, who also won the B grade championship and Saturday ringer; Mrs H. Grace, Wednesday ringer. J. Clark won the men’s A grade championship; G. Ashcroft the B grade championship; R. J. Guest, the Thompson- Cun; and L. J, Edwards the knock-out trophy.
