WIGRAM SHIELD WON BY OTAGO The Otago branch of the Royal Life Saving Society has won the Wigram Shield for the first time, its success being announced in the report of the New Zealand Council which is to be presented at the annual meeting in Wellington at the end of the present week. The Wigram Shield, given by the late Sir Henry Wigram in 1912 for competition among the / New Zealand branches of the society, is awarded by the council to the branch gaining in award points in a year, the greatest percentage increase or the lowest percentage decrease over the average of the previous two years. Hawke's Hay, the only other branch to do so, allowed an increase, of 24.1 per cent., which enabled it to lake second place. Canterbury was third, Taranaki fourth, and Wellington fifth. The total number of awards issued in Olago was 916, compared with 589 for the previous vear and 335 for 1939-40.
