RACING
* [By St. Claib.] A .Rich Circuit. At a meeting of the committee of th* Dunedin Jockey Club yesterday the programme fes* the Dunedin Cup meeting on Boxing Day and January 9 was dratted, and it was decided to increase the stakes by £1,200. In addition to endowing the Cup with £I,OOO, the Publicans’ Handicap will carry £SOO, the principal handicap ou the second day £6OO, and the Janies Hazlett Gold Cup £6OO. It was also decided to close the nominations for these four races a fortnight before the general nomination day, declare the handicaps the following week, and make a first acceptanca for the Dunedin Cup and Publicans’ Handicap due ou the dale that the nominations for the other races on the programme close. With increased stakes already announced by the Wyndham and Southland Racing Clubs, and probably increased stakes at the Waikcuaiti meeting, owners in the South Island are going to have a very rich circuit at holiday time. Stakes ranging from £SOO to £I,OOO are not plentiful at tha present time, and it is quite ou the cards that they will tempt some of the North Island owners to patronise the meetings. Acceptances for tlie Gore meeting, to b* held next Saturday, close on Monday, at 5 p.m., and for the Oamaru trotting meeting on Labour Day, at 8 p.m. It has been decided to retire Aravaua from racing, and she is to be mated - with Royal Chief this season. The first acceptance for the New Zealand Trotting Cup is due nest Thursday, at 5 p.m. . . . ' It is reported from Invercargill that Marquee, who has won £6OO, in stakes, will not be a starter in the big handicap at Gore next .Saturday, but „will take his place in the seven furlongs hack race. At the last of the epnvniiice of the Forbury Park Trotting Club Mr C. Gieseler was appointed assistant starter for the season.' -
Jonathan Jo, the only three-year-old nominated for this year's New Zealand Cup, is Australian-bred, and was purchased at the Sydney Easter yearling sales, 1941. Ho is by the Phalaris horse. Christopher Robin, from the New Zealand-bred mare Futurity, by Posterity from Motley, by Absurd, and tracing back to the wonderful Eulogy family. ; The acting secretary of the Dunedin Jockey Club is endeavouring to arrange with the Waikouaili, Wyndhara, and Southland Racing Clubs to issue a booklet programme for the holiday meetings to be held by these clubs. This idea should appeal to all the clubs concerned, as it will mean additional and economic publicity. In this year’s Trotting Cup C. S. Donald has Bayard Clockwork, and Ferry Post engaged, M. C. McTigue has Fine Art and Loyal Rey, and R. Townley Dusky Sound and Pleasant Guy. Horses nominated for this year’s race that took part in last year’* event are: Josedale Grattan (winner), Peter Smith (third), Colonel Grattan (fourth), Bayard, Ferry Post, Fine Art, and Gold Bar.
In connection with the Gore meeting, to be held next Saturday, the Railway Department announces that a special train hat been arranged to and from Dunedin direct to the course. It has been timed to arrive in Gore early so that passengers will have time to obtain a meal before the programme commences, and will allow them plenty of time to obtain their evening meal-in Gore before commencing the return journey. The Oamaru Trotting Club has received a most attractive lot of nominations for its meeting on Labour Dav, and the Hannon Memorial Handicap will again provide a good try-out for the majority of the New Zealand" Cup candidates. This race grows in favour with owners each year, and as the Oamaru fixture is the last opportunity owners have of giving their horses a run in public before the big meeting at Addington patrons of the North Otago Club will be treated to some high-class harness racing. In framing the programme for the spring meeting the committee of the Forbury PanTrotting Club has followed the idea of the Wellington Trotting Club in providing two races of approximately the same class right through the card, thus giving each horse engaged at the fixture the chanco of starting twice during the day without going out of its proper class. Nowadays' when horses have to be travelled so far for one day’s racing this innovation at Forbury Park will be appreciated by owners. Wardress, who is now nine years old, and Boloyua and Native Song, each seven year* old, are the only aged horses engaged in this year’s New Zealand. Cup. Of the othkrs there are 12 six-year-olds. 11 five-year-olc?, and seven four-year-olds, Jonathan Jo being, the only three-year-old nominated. The mares engaged are Classform, Gay Genet, Katesbridge, Military Maid, Sally. Lunn, Southern Sail, and Wardress. Up to tha time of the nominations closing Blue Border, Lambourn, and Military Maid had not started this season.
Last year’s winner of the New Zealand' Trotting Cup, Josedale Grattan, is the back, marker in this year’s race, and has been assessed at 4.24. He established a time record for the race by winning in 4.15. Josedaie Grattan will be racing at Auckland next Saturday in the Jellicoe Handicap, l|m, 3.25 class race, jn which he has been placed 108yds behind. This race will probably be Josedale Grattan’s try-out for the big race at Addington next month, and the big field in front of him is likely to cause hint mors trouble than the starts he is giving away. None of Paper Money’s progeny has ever won over two miles on the flat, but quite a number of them were brilliant performers up to a mile and a-half. When Cerne Abbaa won the New Zealand Cup in 1937 she was followed homo by Wild Chase and Silver Streak, both by Paper, Money. Previous to that performance Silver Streak had always been looked on as_a champion up to a mile, but Wiki Chase had several good perform, ances to his credit up to a mile and a-half. This year Boloyna is a Paper Money hofsa that has been given, a nomination in tho Cup. He has won ovCr a mile and a-quar-ter, and on the dam’s side comes from a family that has been noted for both speed and stamina. His dam. Ravenna, was a good mare up to a mile and a-quarter, and five of the six of her progeny—Amy John, son, Ventrac, Travenna, Alma, and Boloyna —have won over the same distance. Rav. enna is by Solferino from Droski, by Stepniak from Whirlpool, by St. George from Walersprite by Traducer. This good stay, ing blood should help Boloyna.
