POLARISED LIGHT

Some interesting points with regard to polarised light were brought up at a recent United States lighting convention. The use of polarisation to solve the glare problem from automobile headlights has become a commercial possibility since the introduction of polarisers in sheet form, such as “ Polaroid.” Much higher beam candle powers are needed, not only to compensate for the lack of. intensity due to polarisation, but also to make up for loss of contrast from the fact that light reflected from dark objects remains polarised to a much greater extent than that reflected from light ones. Candle power before polarisation must be about times the present e.p. of unpolarised lamps to give equal ease of vision under clear road conditions. Perhaps the most important announcement was the discovery of a plastic material which can lie applied directly to the headlight lens. This, it is stated, is not a matter of crystals in suspension, but a true polarising plastic.
