REPORTED PORTRAIT OF CHRIST FOUND IN PRIVATE COLLECTION Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright (Ref. 11.55 a.m.) LONDON', Oct. 11. What is claimed to be an authentic portrait of Christ was found in an Italian private collection, according to the ‘ Giornale d’ltalia,’ which says it i$ the work of a contemporary artist who probably witnessed the crucifixion. Professor Rostovgeff found the portrait, which is on a medallion during excavations at Dura in Palestine. Christ is represented on the cross Vking at his mother, who is leaning against the cross, St. John is standing beside her. The medallion is believed to have once belonged to the Apostle. The inscription on the back is “ Sios,” which Italian experts believe is an abbreviation of the engraver’s name. There are also two Roman sixes, meaning the sixth how of Christ’s suffering. The owner, Madame Della Paolera, is stated to have been offered £300,000 for the medallion by a Chilean collector.
