APPEALS FROM SERVICE

THIS MORNINGS' SITTING The No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board— Messrs J. R. Bartholomew (chairman), J. Price, and H. Hodgson—held a sitting this morning, when appeals based on , the grounds of public interest or undue hardship, were heard. Mr A. N. Haggitt appeared for the Crown. ■ W.A.A.C. APPEAL. Whitcombe and Tombs Ltd. appealed against the calling of Miss K. E. Gale, an assistant in the educational book department for service in the W.A.A.C. The appeal was opposed by the Army authorities, who in evidence stated that approximately 40 girls were wanted for specialist work. It was difficult to get suitable girls.—Appeal dismissed. The following appeals against general service were adjourned sine die:—Lands and Survey Department for G. R. Galbreath, draughtsman; Director of National Service for C. C. Auld, mechanician, P. G, Spencer, linesman. An appeal by the Atlas Box Company for J. H. Bowie, P. Byrne, and D. Nicol, employees, was adjourned until January 31, reservists to serve in the Horae Guard. Messrs Frew Bros.’ appeal for W. J. Thomson, baker, was adjourned sine die on condition that Thomson served in the E.P.S. In the appeal by Messrs Wood and McLaren for S. R. McLaren, W. E. Rendall, and J. W. Mains, plumbers, the application for Rendall was dismissed on condition that ho is not called up before November 30. Main is not to be called up before McLaren is released from camp, and in the case of McLaren he is recommended for release from camp and to join the Home Guard. OTHER CASES. W. Daglish, company director, and H. C. Inward were both recommended for release from camp, service to be with the Home Guard. The Otago High Schools’ Board had their appeal for T. L, Bailey, teacher, adjourned until the next sitting of the board. T. Blackley, wool foreman with Dalgety and Co. was recommended for release from camp, and to serve with the Home Guard. The Inspector of Mines appealed for the release from oamp of J. H. Thomson, J. Hood, W. McPherson, M. J. Anderson, C. A.’Coats, J. J. Argyle, and H. R. Fraser, miners employed in the essential industry of scheelite mining. After hearing evidence the Chairman remarked on the unsatisfactory ' nature of the appeal.—Decision was In the appeal by Spencer and Dunkley Ltd. for T. Randall, H. H. Hastie, P. Robertson, drivers, decision was reserved. The appeal by A. Clifton, gardener, against general service was dismissed. Decision was reserved in the appeal of Mrs M. L. G. Foote for V. J. Foote, farmer.
