FIVE JAP. WARSHIPS SUNK
TWO OTHERS BADLY DAMAGED NEW NAVAL BATTLE IN SOLOMONS LONDON, October 14. The sinking of five Japanese warships and one transport and the damaging of two other warships in the Solomon Islands are announced in a Navy Department communique from Washington. The enemy ships sunk comprise one heavy cruiser, four destroyers, and one transport. One cruiser and one destroyer were also damaged. The latter is believed to have since sunk, while the cruiser was out of action and burning. One United States destroyer was sunk in the operations, and several United States warships were damaged. The Japanese succeeded in reinforcing their troops on Guadalcanal Island. It is announced that New Zealand airmen are co-operating with the Americans in the Solomons area.
