WIDESPREAD ATTACKS

MIDDLE EAST AIR OPERATIONS FIFTEEN AXIS PLANES DESTROYED OVER MALTA (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, Oct. 12. A Cairo communique states; Heavy bombers on the night of October 10-11 attacked the aerodrome at Tymbaki, Crete, starting fires. Long-range fighters attacked l a schooner north-east of Sidi Barrani, the ship being left enveloped in smoke. Targets on the Sol-lum-Sidi Barrani road were also attacked. Heavy bombers claim a direct hit on the stern of a merchantman in an attack yesterday on a southbound convoy near Crete. An escorting Messerschmitt was shot down into the sea. Heavily escorted enemy bombers made five attacks yesterday on Malta. Our fighters destroyed at least 15 enemy aircraft, with as many more damaged. We lost one Malta fighter in all these and other operations.
