OBITUARY

MR W. D. LYSNAR (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 12. The death occurred at Wellington this morning after a short illness of Mr William Douglas Lysnar, a former member of Parliament. Mr Lysnar was born in Auckland in 1867, and was educated by his father, Mr W. Dean Lysnar, a retired schoolmaster. In 1887 he joined the legal firm of Messrs Sievwright and de Lautour, hut commenced practice on his own account in 1892. He took a prominent part in public affairs, and besides serving as a member of tho Gisborne Borough Council and as mayor for a term, he represented) the Gisborne electorate in Parliament from 1919 to 1931, when he was defeated by Mr D. W. Coleman, the Labour Party’s candidate. Mr Lysnar again unsuccessfully contested the scat against Mr Coleman at the 1935 election. In recent years he figured prominently in finance litigation against the National Bank, in which voluminous evidence was taken, the appellant eventually being granted leave to appeal to the Privy Council. In tho Maori War he served with the East Coast Hussars against the Te Kooti Natives. Besides bis professional career, he was interested in farm properties and in the Gisborne Farmers’ Meat Company, of which ho was chairman. ,
