DEATH OF D.C.M. WINNER

HORNINGTON BOY

Warrant-officer E. W. Hobbs, D.C.M., who is reported as having died of wounds in the Middle East, was a Mornington boy, the second son of the late Mr A. Hobbs and Mrs Hobbs, now of Invercargill. He was educated at the Mornington School, and worked in Dunedin and Invercargill. He played Soccer for the Central Club in Invercargill, and while in Auckland about 1951 played in the trial games for the selection of the New Zealand League team to visit England. Warrant-officer Hobbs was among those who received decorations at the hands of General Sir Bernard Freybcrg on April 4. Ho served throughout the campaigns in Greece, Crete, and Libya, and, though he was wounded in Crete, ho insisted on remaining with his unit. He came through the last Libyan campaign with his Bren gun carrier and crew intact. It was in this campaign that he won his decoration. He was wounded in the course of operations in Libya, and was on the dangerously ill list, but was recently reported to be making progress. His wife resides in Dunedin.
