SPORT IN BRITAIN
NEW ZEALAND PARTICIPANTS RUGBY MATCHES ARRANGED (N.Z.P.A. Special Correipondent.) (Bee. 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 7. ■ Sergeant L. Woodward ' (Christchurch) , representing the Amateur Athletics Association ‘in the 120yds hurdles at Bending, was beaten Iby the former Olympic hurdler, Finlay. Time, 15 2-ssec. Finlay won by 3ytls. The association is presenting Woodward with a blazer. Pilot-officer Eric Grant (Auckland), who carried out several raids with the New Zealand Bomber Squadron, including visits to St. Nazaire, Wilhelmshaven, Emden, and Bremen, also mine-laying trips, is now attached to the New Zealand air liaison office, where he is also sports officer. He has already arranged 12 matches for the R.N.Z.A.F. Rugby team in the coming season, also for a combined Australian and New Zealand team to play South Wales at Swansea on February 13. Tills is believed to he the first Auzae team to play in Britain. Many R.N.Z.A.F. members of last year’s team are missing or transferred, for which reason practically a new team will play, the newcomers including Pilotofficer R. IV. G. Emery, Sergeant B. Hoffernau (both of Auckland), Sergeant R. A. Powell (King Country), Sublieutenant. Fleet Air Arm. N. Lawrence (Wanganui). A. A. Copeland (Canterbury). and S. Green (Palmerston North). Copeland and Green are two agriculturists who recently arrived in Britain.
