SHIFTING A TOWNSHIP
REMOVAL FROM SWAMPY LAND (Special) WELLINGTON, Sept. 7. The complete removal of a township is involved! in the activities of the Lands Department, which is at present engaged in surveying for subdivision purposes a new site for Tokaanu township in the Lake Taupo district. It has become necessary to transfer the township owing to tne swampy nature of much of the land. The new site is elevated, and lies to the west of the old township. Exactly in the centre is a Native cemetery, and on one boundary is a large hot springs reserve. The site is within half a mile of the centre of the old township. There will be no freehold,, the titles being held from the Crown, and a sufficient number of subdivisions are being made to provide for all the occupiers of sections on the old site.
