EL A LAM MIX BATTLE. LONDON, September s.—The Eighth Army southwards of Buweisat Bidge all day yesterday Icept up the pressure against the 'Axis forces. All arms were engaged iu the fighting, which was on a considerable scale. The action miovcd steadily westwards, with Rommel making no counter-move in an easterly direction. The British found 39 Axis tanks abandoned on the ,battlefield and destroyed them. The Allied forces continue to harass and bombard the niain Axis concentrations between JTemeimat and Rmvoisat. The British United Press’s Cairo Correspondent says Allied planes yesterday made 200 sorties in the biggest light bomber effort ever known. In this theatre the Luftwaffe was almost completely grounded, sharply contrasting with operations on Tuesday and Wednesday, when the Germans put up their greatest Stuka fight to date in Africa.—Press Association. funny farce pursues its merry way the situations become more and more ludicrous, and the six brilliant comedians in their own inimitable fashion face a series of side-split-ting adventures, while between them they keep up a running fire of amusing crosstalk. STRAND A swiftly-moving adventure film about six gnus and cattle rustlers, set iu the eyefilling scenery of the wild Cisco range, was unrolled at the Strand last niglit. It was ‘ Twilight on the Trail,’ latest of Paramount’s Hopalong Cassidy series starrin| handsome two-fisted William Bovd. Hoppy, in this, the forty-first of the series made byproducer Harry Sherman, is ably aided lii his quest for the hideout of a gang of cattle-stealing desperadoes by Andy California Clyde and by Brad King, the exrodeo champ., who plays Lucky Johnny Nelson. Beautiful Wanda McKay has. the romantic feminine lead. Riding his famous white horse, Topper, Boyd lands right in the middle of his most thrilling adventures in ‘ Twilight on the Trail.’ Called in to save the ranchers of Antelope Valley' from (he depredations of a gang of rustlers, Hoppy and his pals turn up in outlandish dude regalia, much to the disgust of the ranchers, who cannot see how these apparently foppish Easterners can help them. There is method, however, to Hoppy’s madness. The dude outfits not only fool the ranchers, but throw the outlaws off their guard. When the time comes the throe dudes discover the gang’s hideout in a hidden valley, and before going into action throw off their disguises. In the light that follows Hoppy and California are captured. They manage to escape, however, just as the rustlers are about to ambush a posse of ranchers. Caught iu a murderous cross-fire, the gang is wiped out, and once again justice triumphs in the Wild West. Also showing are the final episodes of ’ Mandrake the Magician.’ GRAND A film witli a povterful story and many dramatic scenes heads the new bill at the Grand this week. ‘ The Man Who Returned to Life ’ features John Howard in the character of a bank cashier who one morning picks up a paper apd reads that man is about to be hanged for murdering him. Lovely blonde Lucille Fairbanks is seen as his wife, and Marcella Martin and Ruth Ford play minor roles. The main part of the film is set in a small southern town, where Howard arouses the enmity of an old family of the district and is eventually indicted on a charge of murder—the charge being based on the fact that he accepted a lift from a member of the family whose death was caused when his car crashed over a bank. The case fails, and when Howard is released on bail he is forced to tlce from the town because of the attempts of the townsfolk to lynch him. Seven years later, after being settled in California, lie opens the paper to read the astounding, news that a man has been condemned to death for having murdered him. There is a striking climax to the drama. The supporting picture, ' Alias Boston Blaokie,’ is another of the series of crime detection films. Chester Morris plays the title role, and the film has as its background the celebrations of the Christinas season. MAYFAIR Willi the Universal star, Deanna Durbin, in the main role, the new film to be screened at the Mayfair to-day is ‘lt Started With Eve.’ Charles Laughton, whose characterisation is certain to gain the appreciation of patrons, is also starred. Essentially comedy, ‘lt Started With Eve’ has its serious moments. It concerns an aged millionaire (Charles Laughton) on his deathbed, and (lie plot is built around his last request to see his son’s socially prominent fiancee. The supporting cast includes Charles Coleman and Waller Catlett. The associate picture is ‘ Caught in the Draft,’ featuring Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour.
