RECAPTURE ATTEMPTED

SOLOMON ISLANDS THEATRE LONDON, September 3. Fresh attempts have been made by the Japanese to land in various parts of the South-eastern Solomons. Enemy parties which succeeded in landing are being heavily engaged by United States marines.. American planes operating from Guadalcanal attacked the Japanese ships which took part in the landing operations. A number of direct hits were scored, but the extent of the damege is not yet known. A Flying Fortress attacked a Japanese tanker in the Solomons area and left the ship blazing. The American marines in the Solomons are being steadily reinforced, and their positions strengthened.
