REHABILITATION

SPECIAL ATTENTION TO AMPUTEES (P.A. WELLINGTON, September 3. Matters affecting Avar pensions and rehabilitation were presented to the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, at the conclusion, of the conference of the New Zealand War Amputees’ Association. They were largely in the nature of remits, etc.,: and on the suggestion of the Minister the specific problems presented are to be formally drafted and presented to him at a later date. Mr Jones gave an assurance that the questions raised would meet with full and earnest consideration. He recognised that amputees, both of the last and the present war. had problems differing from the problem of others, and encouragement was needed in enabling them to rehabilitate themselves. The utmost would be done to assist in seeing that these men were re-established to a full and useful place in the community. In regard to pensions, the Minister intimated that a number of improvements were being considered, as well as the removal of certain anomalies.

Speaking of rehabilitation in general, Mr Jones said the problem was greater than that after the last war, as not only had the men going overseas to be considered, but also the large army of men serving in New Zealand, including young men from 18 years upwards, who were among those who would have to go back into or be taken into industry.
