SMART CAPTURE
CONSTABLE PURSUES SAFE THIEF While Temporary Constable Eric Burns was on patrol in. George street about 11 o’clock last night he heard a peculiar scraping sound emanating from an alley-way adjoining the premises of Messrs Wardell’s grocery shop. As the constable approached he saw two men peeping round the corner, and they, observing the police uniform, made oif in different directions. The constable promptly gave chase to one of tie nien, calling upon two _members of the Air Force who were in the vicinity to assist, which they did, and! the man was run down in Filleul street. Subsequently a safe mounted on a small, truck was found in the alley-way, the alertness of the young constable thus probably preventing the safe being broken open and the contents stolen._ In the Police Court this morning Victor Royden Curline (39), a tinsmith, was charged with breaking and entering the premises of Wardells_ (Dunedin)’ltd. and committing a crime therein. At the request of Detective-sergeant Hall, who related the circumstances of the chase and capture, the accused was remanded until Thursday next. An application by accused for hail was refused.
