RADIO SERVICES
MERGER OF TECHNICAL BRANCHES WAR CABINET'S DECISION (Special.) ‘WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. A merger of the technical branches of the National and Commercial Broadcasting Services affecting both men and equipment has been decided upon by the War Cabinet. It is hoped by this amalgamation to release the maximum number of radio technicians for more important war work. The combined technical services will be in the charge of Mr J. R. Smith, engineer of the National Service. Making this announcement, the Hon. D. Wilson, Minister of Broadcasting, said that both radio services had been working many months with greatly depleted staffs owing to the largo number of male employees called up for service with the armed forces, and the only possible way in which any considerable further number of technicians could be released was by a merger. Consideration was being given to the elimination for the duration of the war of any and every superfluous function of broadcasting, which would result in a further release of man power.
