SACRED SOLO RECALLS The forty-first annual festival of the Dunedin Competitions Society was continued this morning, classes being heard in His Majesty’s Theatre, Victoria Hall, and the Concert Chamber. A very large class was heard in the latter hall, the open sacred solo, in which Hr H. Temple White heard 36 competitors. The recalls, to be heard to-night, were Misses Gertrude Ardagh (Christchurch) and Clara Rouse. The results were: — ELOCUTION. Judge: Mr Errol Muir. Reading at Sight, open; prose and poetry; 200 points.—Miss Enid Carter, 150 points, 1; Miss Chris Justin, 2; Miss Sylvia Lawrence, 150, 3. Highly commended; Miss Winnie Dowie. Nine competitors. Reading at Sight, open, 12-16.—Miss Shirley Miller (Christchurch). 76 point's, 1; Miss Nola Sutherland, 74, 2; Miss Audrey Eady (Christchurch), 72, 3. Highly commended : Miss Elaine Angelo. Sixteen competitors. .Mr Muir commented on the tendency to dramatise the prose reading. This was unnatural, as was another tendency to deliver it as an elocutionary recital. He recommended that competitors should practice reading aloud. The winning performance was a good one. VOCAL. Judge; Dr T. Vernon Griffiths. Child’s Action Song, in character, under 12; own selection; 125 points.—Flora MacDonald, 111 points, 1; Joan Mclnnes and Alma Johnson, 109 (equal), 2; Neville Madden and Brian Parke, 108 (equal), 4. Very highly commended: Maureen Keenan, Raymond Croot, Patricia Stewart. Highly commended: Douglas Bandiem, Raewyn Lamb, June Tregilgus (Mosgiel), Irene Mathieson. Commended; John Cornish, Bernadette Lamb, Edna Hardy, Rosabel Little. Twenty-seven competitors. DANCING. Judge: Miss Kathleen Mathews. Song and Danes, under 12; own selection. —Billie Chambers, 83 points, 1; Lois Pope, 81, 2; Maureen Keenan, 78, 3. Highly commended ; Aileen King, June Tregilgus (Mosgicl), Shirley M. Harvey (Browns). Nine competitors. Events Ahead. An entertaining programme will be presenter! at His Majesty’s Theatre this evening, including the Lyric Choir, Miss Ethel Todd’s spectacular ballets, piano duos and concertos, character recitals, sacred solos, dance duos, humorous recitations, vocal solos with accompaniment and obbligato, and vocal trios. Interesting sessions will be held to-mor-row at His Majesty’s Theatre. In the morning the vocal solos (lioder section) and baritone solos will bo held, and in the afternoon there will bo the Gilbert and Sullivan contest, men’s vocal scholarship, any! children’s duets. At the Concert Chamber character recitals, humorous character sketches,- instrumental quartets, and vocal solos will be judged. At the Burns Hall in the afternoon tap dancing, and in the Victoria Hall the elocution scholarship have been arranged. Patrons arc reminded of the demonstration concerts on Saturday. A matinee will be held on Saturday afternoon, commencing at 2.15, when the best of the juvenile items will be presented by prize winners. The festival will conclude on Saturday evening with a grand demonstration concert, when the outstanding items of the festival will be given by section winners.
