LOGAN PARK SERVICE

QUESTION OF MILEAGE The proposals set out in the Transport Committee’s report regarding the reduction of mileage as requested by the Minister of Transport were not allowed to go through without some discussion at last night’s meeting of the City Council. The proposals comprised! the reinstating of a half-hourly tram service on the Logan Park route and augmenting the service at busy periods by running buses to Dundas street. Cr L. M. Wright asked whether the council had given full consideration to the question whether the Logan Park buses should not be used as feeders for the trams, connecting at Frederick street, with tickets made interchangeable. This would conserve tyres and obviate the running of buses on the same route as the trams, in reply to this question, the chairman of tlie committee, Cr M. C. Henderson, said that the buses would be running only at periods of peak loading, and ho thought that Cr Wright’s suggestion would not be a convenient one for the travelling public. He would, however, place the matter before the committee for further consideration. Cr R. Walls pointed out that the 2n per cent, reduction in bus mileage as requested by the Minister referred only to the ordinary services He asked whether there was any intention to cut down the special trips such as those from St. Clair terminus to the golf links, also the buses which ran ahead of the trams in the late Saturday night services. Cr Henderson, in reply, said that large numbers of people were being carried on the late buses referred to, and it would he impossible for the available taxis to accommodate them Even if they could there would be no saving of petrol or tyres. Cr Walls explained that lie was referring only to those buses which ran on the same routes as those followed by the trams. Cr -I. Wilson: If the late Saturday night service wa* eliminated people might go home earlier. Cr Henderson pointed out that there were routes followed by the buses which the trains could* not serve. He would, however, bring the point raised’ by Cr "Walls before the committee.
