[By St. Clair.] At Wingatui This Morning. The course proper, with the trestles about 45ft out from the rails, was open for fast work at Wingatui, and provided good, but not, fast, going. Coy opened proceedings by sprinting over three furlongs in 42sec, but was not ridden out. Damascus and Forte finished together at tjie end of half a mile in 54 l-ssec. Compeer was going better than Taxpayer over seven furlongs in Imm 40 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 58sec. Gold Nugget ran right away from Kohara over five furlongs in 67 3-ssec, after taking 26 3-sseo for the first two. On the No. X track, just inside the rails, Light Cavalry ran three furlongs in 37 3*ssgc Nigiitcalm, on the same track, put up the best gallop of the morning, running seven furlongs in Imin 31 l-ssec, the first three in 37 3-ssec. Gay Lancer easily accounted for Attorney over five furlongs on the same track in 64 2-ssec. Jacksonville outjumped Strip at each of the three schooling fences they raced over. Among the horses doing slow work was Lord Nuffield, who looks big but sound and well after a lengthy holiday. News and Views. l It is announced that Paigle, the dam of Sally Luun, will be mated with Kincardine, the sire of Kindergarten, this season. The Oamaru Jockey Club’s annual statement of accounts show that a profit of £655 was made on last year’s operations. For the spring meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club £1,500 tvill l be offered in stakes, and a mile and a-quarter hack race will bo included in the programme. R. Towuley was badly shaken in the smash up in the National Handicap on Saturday, and L.- Frost suffered abrasions to his hands, in addition to an injury to one of his ankles. Mr J. Richardson has returned Colonel Grattan to V. Lecming’s stable at Prebbleton, where he will undergo a preparation for the New Zealand Cup. Colonel Grattan has started in the last three races for the Cup. Lord Glanely had no heir, and this fact probably accounts for his executors soiling. his very select stud of 134 horses to Mr A. E. Allnatt for round about £IOO,OOO. This private sale would be deplored by breeders in America and elsewhere, as the stud contained a number of the best-bred horses in Great Britain. F. D. Jones has two representations in the McLean .Stakes next month. One is a big bay colt by Bulandshar from Roman Scandal, who has 'had the name Islam claimed for him, and will carry Mr J. A. McDougall’s colours. The other is a gelding by Man’s Pal from Windshield, who has not yet been named, and is owned by Mrs J. W. Woodhouse. Mr L. H. Collinson stated at Palmerston North recently that though his horse Foxiuna was beaten in the National Hurdles, he was glad it had been by Rcnascor. He
added that he bought Snowshoe, the dam of Renascor, as a yearling at Waikanae, just as earlier he had bought Martulla, the dam of Foxiana. He also said that he had raced Martulla and Snowshoe, and that he had daughters from them by Coronach at present running in the same paddock. C. O. McCarthy lias a two-year-old bay colt by St. Boswells from Bun Fight training on satisfactorily at Riccarton for the McLean Stakes. The youngster lacks nothing on the score of size, and /is quiet. Bun Fight was a fbtonyhurst-bred mare by Winning Hit from Scrimmage, dam of good winners in Fracas and Trench Fight. The St. Boswells colt was a Trentham purchase at 300 gs, and will carry the colours of the Auckland sportsman, Mr M. J. Moodabe, who has done well with Whackie in recent months. Mr D. M. Tweedio, president of the Riverton Racing Club, will have a team of four horses to race for him this season. They are Gold Flight, Winning Flight, Royal Plight, and Alpine. Royal Flightds the two-year-old by Salmagundi-Francolin, who will make a bid to emulate Winning Flight’s success in the McLean Stakes. The string has been taken in band by J. Langford, the well-known trainer and hprseman. W. E. Rainbow, who led in two winners for Mr Tweedio last year, is now in camp. Mr Tweedie’s horses have engagements at the Otago Hunt meeting.
