SAWYERS BAY ITEMS
—Obituary. — The death occurred at Sawyers Bay recently. at the age of 98 years, of Mr W. H. Walker, a highly-respected resident of the district. Mr Walker was born at Billon, Staffordshire, in 1844, and in his early days worked at the Motherwell iron and. steel works in Lanarkshire. He married Miss Ann Pittaway Dalziel, and of the marriage there were three sons and two daughters. His wife predeceased him 13 years ago. At the ago of 25 years he came came to New Zealand, settling in Dunedin, and found employment at Calder’s quarry, North-east Valley, and later at Point, continuing at the occupation of a quarryman until he was over 70 years of age. For the last 22 years he had lived in retirement with his daughter, Mrs A. McKenzie, of Sawyers Bay. Mr William Stewart Henderson, whose death occurred recently at Sawyers Bay, was born at Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, 65 years age-. In his early twenties lie came io New” Zealand and 35 years ago settled at Sawyers Bay, where he secured employment at the Cllendermid Tannery, and was actively engaged in his duties until the day of his death. Mr Henderson took a keen interest in choir work, and was the first conductor at tho Sawyers Bay Presbyterian Church. He also served on the local school committee for several years. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters;-
A successful concert was held in the Public Hall recently to raise funds for the All Purposes Appeal, the talent being mainly local performers, assisted by several visitors from Ravensbournc and Port Chalmers. Mr W. T. Beagley presided, and towards the close of the programme thanked the performers for their valued assistance, and the audience for its support. The items were as follows:—Character song, Anglican Sunday School pupils; song, Miss M. E. Laing: pianoforte solo, Mrs J. Ellis; play-, ette, Sawvers Bay School children, under (ho direction of Miss Lai’ng; dance, Miss Mnsson; song, Mrs Elliott; Sawyers Bay School Children's Choir; song, Mr Hill; duet, Misses Verona Nelson and Merle Mains; songs. Mrs .4.. B. Roy and Mr L. Neilson; violin solo, Mr Erye; negro character sketch, Women’s Institute. The amount raised in Sawyers Bay for natriotie purposes since the inception of the campaign for the All Purposes Appeal amounts tc the creditable sum of £440 13s 4d.
