TERMS OF PEACE

At a mooting of the South Dunedin branch of the W.C.T.U. the Rev. B. M. Tasker quoted largely from a work by the Bishop of Chichester, and expressed satisfaction that such men as lie and the Archbishop of Canterbury were taking the lead in discussing the peace terms and making efforts to remove the causes of war, which, the speaker said, were largely economic, the systems of the original opponents in this present struggle being basically capitalistic, which meant the dominance of those in power and affluence over the weaker nations. Mr Tasker spoke of the workers’ inability to buy the goods they produced, which meant a glut of goods, for which foreign markets were sought by the opposing Governments, and which plunged the world anew into warfare. He described Ihe solution of the unemployment problem by armament production as “ crazy economics.” In the peace terms outlined by the Archbishop of Canterbury the suggestion was made not to plunge precipitately into settlements which settled nothing, but to make an interim settlement, which could be tried out for live years. After that period a permanent settlement might bo evolved. Mr Tasker spoke of the general apathy and indifference regarding social evils, and said the community must be roused from this ignorance. How, he did not know, but it was imperative that it bo accomplished.
