MISS HUNT WINS CHIEF PIANO SOLO Tbc president uf tbo Dunedin Competitions Society, Mr W. R. Sinclair, was the chairman lust night, when the forly-lirst annual festival was advanced a stage further. There was a fair attendance at His Majesty’s Theatre when the finals for the chief piano solo, Shakespearean recitation, and men’s, national song were among the events decided. One of tlie most, enjoyable features ot Die evening’s programme was a group ot items contributed by tiro Cecilia Choir, conducted by Miss Mc-da Paine, with Miss M. MeAdam as accompanist. VOCAL. Judge; Mr H. Temple While. Vocal Solo, 12-16.—Miss Meryl Lemin, 8S points, 1; Miss Lois Yule and Miss Beverley Pollock, 86, 2 equal; Miss Hilary Chandler. 85, 4. Very highly commended: Roma E. Smith, Yvonne Finucrty, Helen Bogie, June Chamberlain (Gore), Beverley Cater. Highly commended; Norma E. Murray, Yvonne Hill, Ngairo Maxwell. Commended: Maureen Millard, Jack Geddes, Kay Gibsou, Shirley Mcßae (Middleman.-!!), Florence D. Thompson. Thirty competitors. National Song, Gentlemen, Own Selection. —Mr Llovd Spears, 84 points, 1; Mr K. Miller, 83, 2; Mr Jack Thomson, 81. 3. Eight competitors. National Song, Ladies, Own Selection. — Miss Pat Woods, 87 points, 1; Miss Catherine Stewart (Gore), 86, 2; Miss Margaret. Pratt, 85, 3. Highly comniendoii; Mbs ticr--1 rude Avdagh, Miss Dorothy Mulch, Miss Daphne Swift (Invercargill), Miss Evelyn Clyde, Miss Elsie Kirkham, Miss M. H. Mcßae (Dipton). Twenty-nine competitors. The judge commented on the importance of enunciating words clearly, which was essentia! for good singing. ELOCUTION. Judge: Mr Errol Muir. Recitation, Humorous. Girls 12 and under 16, Own Selection. —The recalls were Miss Rela Cook, Miss Audrey Eddy (Christchurchl. Miss Mary Hopewell (Christchurch). Very highly commended: Miss Winnie Sanderson, Miss Alma MeAhan, Highly commended: Miss Mavis Bode, Miss Peggy Johnson, Miss Elaine Angelo, Miss Clenna Smith, Miss Eunice Morris (Milton), Miss Patricia Campbell (Milton). Twentytwo competitors. The final of ibis event will be board next Wednesday evening. Recitation, Shakespearean, ladies.—Miss Winnie Dowie, 82 points, 1; Miss Elsie Khkliam, 80, 2; Miss Cavell Trask and Miss Bitlie Loan, 78, 3 Highly commended: Miss Margaret Ufton. Eleven competitors. The Judge stated that both first and second prize winners had excellent Shakespearean style and interpretation of character. The whole class showed a careful study of the scene. Verse-speaking Choirs.—Miss M. Randle's Choir, 230 points, 1; St. Dominic’s, 223, 2. Two competitors. The Judge expressed his disappointment in the poor entry in this section. Recitation, ladies, open, ‘ Twelve O’clock.’ —Miss Margaret Ufton, 82 points, 1; Miss Cavell Trask, 81, 2; Miss N. M. Henderson, 80, 3. Highly commended: Miss Enid Carter, Miss Billie Loan, Miss Elsie Kirkham, Miss Winnie Dowie. Fifteen competitors. INSTRUMENTAL. Judge: Dr T. Vernon Griffiths. Chief Piano Solo. —Miss Marie Hunt, 188 points (possible 225), 1; Miss Joan Woods, 170, 2; Miss Ruth Stewart, 169, 3. Highly commended: Miss Marie Winders (Invercargill). Four competitors.- The Judge said that the winner had been consistently good, looming first in all three sections. Her style was mature and her playing confident and full of vitality. Piano Solo, 12 and under 14. —Miss Molly Noouc, 89, 1; Miss Joyce McGregor, 85, 2; Miss Beverley Cater, 84, 3. Highly commended: Miss Lois Kilgour (Oamaru), Miss Nola Bowie, Miss June Angelo, Master Graham Fyfe. Commended: Master Brian Hannaghan, Master David McDonald. Fourteen competitors. The Judge said that, the work of the winner was outstanding in imaginative treatment. ' DANCING. Judge: Miss Kathleen Mathews. Tap Dancing, suitable for musical comedy, without any apparatus.—Miss Evelyn Butterworth, 83, 1; Master Alan Cropley, 81, 2; Miss Clco Lenz and Miss Betty Fletcher, 79, 3. Highly commended: Master Billy Shaw. Twenty-three competitors. Character Dance, 16 and over. —Miss Joan Walsh, 88 points, 1; Miss Pamela Page, 80, 2; Miss Juno Pringle, 79, 3. Four competitors. The Judge said that this was a remarkable section, and that the teachers were to be congratulated.
