NEW YORK, August 27. The United States destroyer Ingraham has been sunk as the result of a collision in a fog in the Atlantic. WASHINGTON, August 27.--The Maritime Commission announced that six liberty ships will be launched on Labour Day, one of which will be named Samuel Gompers, honouring the founder of the American Federation of Labour. The other five will be named in honour of other Labour leaders.
RUGBY, August 27.— : According.to a Malta message, enemy aircraft have been more active over the island than for some time. Two bombing raids caused slight damage, and two raiders were shot down this morning. A force of enemy fighters was intercepted and dispersed by Spitfires. CHUNGKING, August 27.—The United Press correspondent says that the Japanese are using floating islands in the Pacific, possibly made of bamboo, and large enough for aeroplanes to land on. According to the spokesman of the Chinese Military Office, inteligence officers had photographed an island which was used for refuelling and rest stations for planes and pilots.
NEW YORK, August 27. The Karachi correspondent of the ‘ New York Times ’ reports that additional American air force pilots and crews arrived to-day, thus swelling the ever? growing air strength of the United Nations in India. “ Many obscure villages hero have been transformed into vast military camps and airfields,” he adds. “ Indeed, one field the name of which must not be mentioned has become an aerial cross-road of the world.”
