THE COMPETITIONS
CHILDREN'S DAY RECALLS
To-day is children's day at the Dunedin Competitions Society's festival, and all the classes taken in the Concert Chamber, His Majesty’s Theatre, and Victoria Hall this morning were juvenile in interest. Recalls only were announced in most of the sections, a humorous recitation class being the only exception. All of the recalls, apart from the under 13 duet, which will be heard on Monday, will reappear to-night. This morning’s results were: — ELOCUTION. Judge: Mr Errol Muir. Humorous Recitation, girls, under 12; own selection.—Joan Ledgevwood, 72 points, 1; Betty Applegate, 71, 2; Marjorie Smith, 70. 3. Highly commended: Lorraine Pister and Iris Elder. Eleven competitors. The judge expressed disappointment over this class. There was nothing really humorous in the selections, and none of the children seemed to be at home in them. He did not want to hear low comedy, but something light and bright, of which there wore many pieces to choose from. In tho open recitation class, under 10, Mr Muir recalled Bobby Cornish, Aileen King, and Janice McLeod. Instrumental.—Dr T. Vernon Griffiths, who is judge of the instrumental classes, recalled Janico Wilson and Dencso Elliott, and lan Kerr and Elaine Duncan in the under 12 piano duet; and in the piano solo, 16 and under 18, his recalls were Misses Elaine Hulse and Rosaline Plank. Vocal.— Mr H. Temple White, judge of the large under 13 children’s duet, recalled Aileen King and Bobby Cornish, and Bernadette and Raewyn Lamb. Dr Griffiths, who took the under 12 child’s action song, recalled Alma Johnson and Joan Mclnnes. Dancing.— The judge, Miss Kathleen Mathews, recalled Evelyn Butterworth and Lois Pope in -the classic dance, under 16. To-night and Monday.—To-night’s programme in His Majesty’s Theatre will be an entirely juvenile one. items including Mrs Muriel Herbert’s pupils in a 15-minute play, action choruses and songs, piano duets, classic dances, dance duos, recitations, etc. On Monday the elocution scholarship for boys and recitations will he heard in tho Victoria Hall: instrumental solos at Burns Hall; contralto solos, open vocal solos, songs for boys and child’s action songs at the Concert Chamber; ballet dances, ladies’ vocal scholarships, and demi-character dances at His Majesty’s Theatre.
