CHIEF PIANO RECALLS The forty-first annual festival of the Dunedin Competitions Society was. continued this morning, the Concert Chamber, His Majesty’s Theatre,, and Victoria Hall being engaged. The third (own selection) test in the chief piano solo contest was taken, and the recalls announced. These recalls will appear to-night, and the winner will hold the Mcllcr Trophy for ono year. Results this morning were: — INSTRUMENTAL. Judge: Dr T. Vernon Griffiths. Chief Piano Solo. —The recalls were Hisses Joan Woods and Marie Hunt, and will reappear to-night. Piano Solo, 12 and under 14. —‘ Huntsman’s Song.’—The judge recalled Molly Noono and Joyce McGregor, and these competitors will be heard to-night, ELOCUTION. Judge: Mr Errol Muir. Recitation, Girls, under 12, ‘ The Daffodils.’!—June Tregilgus (Mosgiel), 78 points, 1; Alma Johnson, 77, 2; Flora MacDonald, 75, 5. Very highly commended: Sybil Westland. Highly commended: Joan Mclnnes, Raewyn Lamb, Patricia Stewart. Commended: Nancy E. Smith, Edna Hardy, Tui Bode, Delia Higgins. Twenty-four competitors. Recitation, Ladies, ‘ Twelve O’Clcck. The recalls, to be heard to-night, were Cavell Trask and Margaret Of ton. The Judge expressed some regret at having chosen this piece. It required spirited treatment and a, drawing foi-co which could not be attained by the light voices of the competitors. The piece was a very fine one, but it was not a recitation; it was an oration, and called for oratorical powers. , VOCAL. Judge: Mr H. Temple White. National Song, ladies, own selection. —The recalls were Misses Pat. Woods, Catherine Stewart (Gore), and Margaret Pratt. These will be heard to-night. Bass Solo, ‘ Bells of San Marie.’—The recalls, to be heard on Monday night, were Messrs Lloyd Spears and Geoffrey de Lautour. ' ■ Judge: Dr T. Vernon Griffiths. Song for Girls, under 13, ‘ On Wings of Song.’—Joan Mclnnes. 85 points, 1; Flora MacDonald, 84, 2; Maureen Keenan and Valerie Smith, 82 (equal), 3. Highly commended: June Tregilgus (Mosgiel), Valerie Littlewood, Joyce McGregor, Lo:s Yule. Commended: Vivienne Jackson, Bernadette Lamb. Twenty-four competitors. To-night and To-morrow.
A very interesting programme to be presented at His Majesty’s Theatre this evening will include the verse, speaking choirs. Cecilia choir, children’s action choruses, the finalists in the chief piano solo, national songs, tap and character dances, recitations, and ladies’ trios. This should prove a most attractive entertainment. To-morrow will be children’s day. Bright sessions will be held in the morning and afternoon at Victoria Hall, Concert Chamber, and His Majesty’s Theatre. The programme at the theatre should be particufarlv interesting, for it includes character dances and children’s duets in the morning and child’s action songs in the afternoon. Some charming performances should be witnessed in these various competitions.
