SOLOMONS BATTLE. The N.Z.P.A.’s special Austra-* Han correspondent cables: Counterinvasion by the Japanese of the American-held Salomon Islands will ho thwarted. This is the opinion of observers in Australia, reviewing the progress of the battle. The latest news of the great sea and air battle suggests that the' Allied forces hate distinctly the upper hand. It is possible that the major units of the enemy invasion fleet have already, been forced to retire, leaving smaller vessels attempting to carry on. Flying Fortresses, as well as carrier-based aircraft, hare carried the attack seaward: and dealt staggering blows at the strong Japanese striking force.. NEW ZEALANDERS! ATTACK. LONDON, August 26.—'The desert lull has been broken. The British United Press correspondent in the Western Desert reports that ■the New Zealanders, after an intense artillery barrage, attacked the Bologna division in the central sector. The Italians were surprised, and abandoned their positions. The Maoris, who were the spearhead of the attack, left many killed and wounded, and brought back prisoners. MINERS RETURN HOME. A Greymouth Association message states ■ that the Liverpool miners returned home to-day owing to the refusal of the truckers to work under the clipping shed •where the trucks are diverted to the main rope road. The truckers contended that the shed, which had been damaged by wind, was in a dangerous state. The management’s promise of early repair was considered inadequate. The watersiders are idle owing to dangerous conditions.
