SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
(From Our Correspondent.) Personal. —Mr John A. McDonald, who died suddenly at Clinton last week at the age of 53 years, was the eldest son of Mrs C. and the late Donald McDonald, of Clinton. He Was educated at Clinton School, and apart from three years at the Great War, had resided in the district all his life. Prior to enlisting he was in the butchery business, and on his return engaged in farming. At the time of his death he was a keen member of Clinton Home Guard. He was an enthusiastic sportsman, and .engaged in tennis, shooting, angling, and bowling, being one of those responsible for the restarting of the Clinton Club three years ago. He also, took an interest in Rugby, and was a member of the South Otago Rugby Union for some time, while only last year ha was elected a commissioner on Clinton Town Board. He is survived by his wife, three sisters, and a brother (in the forces). Soldiers Entertained.—During the week there have been numerous functions m honour of soldiers on leave throughout South Otago. At Balclutha last night Privates Alister Stewart and lan Gray were entertained at a dance and social, and were tbs recipients of gifts from the Balclutha Soldiers’ Farewell Committee, while on Tuesday night Private Gray was farewelled by the Clutha Football Club, of which ha was a. prominent. member, and received a tangible gift. Corporal W. F. Ashman was entertained by Waitepeka residents, and was presented with a parting gift. Milburn residents entertained Private L, J. Lawrence, while Glenledi residents held a social evening in honour of Private D. F. Gray. Lance-corporal R. Byers was entertained at Helensbrook (Milton), and at Moneymore Lance-corporal J. Graffin was the guest of honour. At Milton there was quite a batch of soldiers at the evening arranged for them. They were:—Corporals W. Sinclair and D. Millar, Drivers E. Joyce and J. Allan, Privates L. Bain, R. Martin, and W, Mason. Ml soldiers were the recipients of gifts, the Mayor stating that to date 120 had left Milton. Other Milton soldiers un. able to be present were Lance-corporal R. Byers, Driver S. Wright, and Privates G# Bcgg and R. Fitzgerald. General.—At a meeting of farmers at Milton on Tuesday night the following were elected a Primary Production Committee for the district: Messrs A. Tweed, B. H, Michelle, D. Grant, W. H. Elliott, and L. M. Scott. —Balclutha _ Home Guard, conducted a community sing and public meeting on Monday night. Speakers were the mayor (Mr J, R. Copland), Colonel E. Selby,, and Mr P. Stewart (Gore), and a* a result of the effort the sum of £lO5 win raised to assist the Home Guard to purchase equipment.—Members of Cluth* Hockey Club paid a surprise, visit to Mr and Mrs E B. Lothian, who are shortly leaving for Stratford, and presented tha former with a cigarette container and expressed thanks to him for the interest h* had taken in the club in many ways during his residence in the town.
