COMMUNIST PUBLICATIONS

SUPPRESSION ORDERS REVOKED (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 26. The Home Secretary (Mr Morrison) to-day revoked the orders made by him in January, 1941, under regulation 20H of the Defence Regulations, prohibiting publication of the ‘ Daily Worker ’ and ‘ The Week.’ As Mr Morrison has more than once stated in Parliament, the imposition of the ban did not imply the suppression of these papers for the whole duration of the.war. Having regardj however, to the fact that the earlier attitude _of the Communist Party in opposition to the war was maintained over a long period, Mr Morrison has taken the view that he would not be justified in lifting the ban_ until the anti-war and mischievous activities of the Communist Party had been discontinued for a substantial period. He has now reached the conclusion that the time has arrived when .the ban can properly be lifted. In communicating this decision to those responsible for these publications, Mr Morrison made it clear that the revocation of these orders in no way derogates from his power and duty to make orders again under the same regulation if at any future date there should be systematic publication of matter calculated to foment opposition to the successful prosecution of the war.
