NAVAL AND AIR RATTLE
SIX JAP. SHIPS DAMAGED
LONDON, August 25. At least six enemy warships, including two aircraft carriers and a battleship, have been damaged and 21 aircraft shot down in a large-scale naval and air battle which developed when a strong Japanese striking force approached the south-eastern group of the Solomon Islands from the north-east. The action began when the enemy attempted to dislodge our troops from their newly-won positions on Tulagi. It is now known that a special battalion of American raider troops took part in the recent attack on Makin Island These men are specially selected and toughened and their equipment and training is a closely-guarded secret. They are landed' from a new type of barge, and it is their job_ to smash bases, disrupt communications, and blow up ammunition dumps. One unit of the battalion is taking part in the Solomons Battle.
