GROZNY OILFIELDS
STRONGER ENEMY THREAT DRIVE ON BLACK SEA PORTS LONDON, August 24. There is news from the Caucasus of a more powerful Gcrm-an threat to the Grozny oilfields. Messages from Moscow’say that in tho face of heavy enemy attacks another withdrawal has been made south of Pyatigorsk. There is no fresh news from the Western Caucasus, but it is known that in this area the Germans are threatening the Black Sea ports of Novorossisk and Tuapse. The fighting around Orel is now favourable to the llussians. The enemy’s armoured fist was found to be lacking in strength -when the llussians couuter-
attacked persistently. The Hangarians suffered lioavily here and also on the Voronezh front. The Russians are holding on to the Voronezh positions they have won from the Hungarians in the past fortnight. In addition to the Kaluga offensive mentioned by Berlin, local activity is reported from the Vyazma, Rjev, Ilmen, and Volkhov sectors.
SOVIET WAR CONTROL FAVOURABLE IMPRESSION CREATED (Rec. 8 a.m.) CAIRO, August 24. Major-general Maxwell (chief of the United States mission to the Middle East), who went to Moscow with Mr Averell Harriman, said be had received the most favourable impression of the Soviet’s management of the war situation. The Russians are pleased with the behaviour of American equipment.
