AUSTRALIA’S FORCES

MORE PLANES AND SHIPS NEEDED (N.Z.P.A. Special Aust. Correspondent) SYDNEY, August 21. The need' for a powerful balanced fighting force to enable Australia to overcome the enemy was again emphasised by the Prime Minister, Mr J. Curtin, at the launching of a naval vessel in an Australian dockyard. Australia was predominantly responsible for its own defence and security, he said, and more planes, as well as more ships, were wanted. The New South Wales Government is pushing engineering and shipbuilding works to completion. The plans provide space for four shipbuilding berths, two of which will take vessels up to 600 ft in length.
