SPLENDID EFFORT

PATRIOTIC RESPONSE REACHES £75,000

Dunedin's Udal for the Patriotic Fund appeal readied £75,000 on Saturday evening—£1,500 in excess of the quota. When the All People's Carnival concluded and the organiser. .Mr Hoy Herbert, announced that he had a further £B,tGS to hand to the Dunedin Patriotic Committee, it made the grand total for the carnival reach £10.003. Mr A. ('. Cameron, chairman of tho Dunedin-St. Kilda Patriotic Committee, expressed warm appreciation of the result of the carnival. i t was a splendid effort, coming as it did when the city had already been well canvassed for funds,” Mr Cameron said, " and tho members of my committee are tremendously grateful to the organised Labour movement in Dunedin for helping ns to complete our quota. The effort lias entailed a great deal of organisation. Indeed, .few other than those coming into personal contact with tho various committees can appreciate just how much work is involved. The organiser. Mr Herbert, has been untiring in his efforts, and ho has every reason to be proud of the result. He has been ably assisted by Mr W. B. Richards and energetic committees. To them we extend our warm congratulations and grateful thanks.” Mr Cameron stated that the £75,000 raised in Dunedin did not include approximately £2OO still to come in from tho recent radio appeal, nor did it include the returns from tho Patriotic Trotting Meeting on Saturday. As a Government subsidy would be forthcoming on tins latter contribution, the anticipated amount should bring the total np to at least £77,000. Owing to tho large increase in the number of New Zealand prisoners of war and a consequent increase in expenditure. Mr Cameron stated that Otago had been asked to raise an additional £22,000. of which Dunedin’s proportion was £10,500. It would therefore bo seen that, a grand total of £B4 000 was required before September 30.
