CARE OF LAID-UP CAR
There are important things which should he done to keep in good condition a cac which is to be laid up for a lengthy period, stales the ‘ Dunlop Bulletin.’ One of them is to prevent possible corrosion of I he cylinder walls of engine by draining off all oil from Iho sump, particularly if it is old and dirty. Such lubricant may have a corrosive ell’cct upon the cylinder walls and 'bearings, as it becomes contaminated during extended use- by absorbing acids from exhaust fumes which get down past the piston rings. The sump oil should bo drained off while the power unit is hot. It should then bo-flushed with new oil and the engine run in neutral for about live minutes / (o dislodge any grit, etc., held in pockets and circulate the fresh oil through the lubricating system. As an additional protection to the cylinder walls, the sparking plugs should bo removed and a spoonful of oil injected into each cylinder, finally rotating the engine a few times by hand or self-starter, with the ignition' turned off, to distribute a good film of clean oil over (be cylinder walls as a safeguard against rust. Replace plugs and tighten securely.
