IMMENSE EMPIRE
BRITISH COMMONWEALTH OF NATIONS BELIEF IN FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 7. In a broadcast address to mark the launching of a campaign to bring home to the people of the United Kingdom the immense power of the British Empire and the meaning of the Empire to its people in these days of trial, Mr A. Duff Cooper, Minister of Information, said it was necessary and right to recall that Britain was not alone in this struggle. British people were members of a world wide league of Powers which had built a new order, based not on tyranny, but on freedom; not on force, but on goodwill. Referring to contributions made to the armed forces from different parts of the Empire, he emphasised that these men could have stayed in their distant homes in comfort, far away from blackouts, air raids, and the miseries of war, but they chose otherwise, they and their fellow-countrymen who made up their minds that this was their war. Britain owed them a specially warmhearted welcome. The fact that their countries chose, through their own democratic Parliaments, to thow themselves into the fight was itself a tremendous challenge to our enemies and tremendous encouragement to all who believed in freedom and democracy as the basis of international order. REAL NEW ORDER NOT OF AXIS DESIGN LONDON, October 8. (Received October 9, at 8 a.m.) Mr Duff Cooper said: “It is we of the British Commonwealth, and not the apostles of Nazi and Fascist dictatorship, who are able to offer the world a real new order. The new order embodied in the Commonwealth has room for the aspirations of every country and race sheltering under it. It is not based on domination by the crack of the whip, but on the freedom of men and nations. We should regard Britain not so much as a fortress as an outpost of empire, carrying the light of civilisation and defying the powers of darkness.” AIR WARFARE GERMANY'S NEW METHODS “NOT THE BLITZKREG" BERLIN, October 8. The official spokesman declared: “ This isn’t the blitzkrieg, but merely hammer blows against England. Germany has adopted a new method of air warfare, designed to achieve: “ (1) Absolute control of the Channel and the entire English coastal area. “ (2) Complete annihilation of London, including all military objectives and industrial production. “ (3) Paralysis of Britain’s industrial, technical, and civil life. “ (4) Demoralisation of the civil population in London and the provinces.
' “ (5) Progressive weakening of the, British fighter force.” He added that the operations thus far were merely an initial phase.
