NOTES AND COMMENTS [By PLUiiriON.] Well-bred Pup. Mr J. Marks, the Dunedin Coursing Club’s official slipper, has in his kennel* at present a fine upstanding dog pup by Big Smoke —Lady Diana. On breeding this pup should be a real champion. In the third, fourth, and fifth removes there are very few dogs and bitches who did not reach championship class, and few who, when their racing days were over, were not successes at the stud. A glance at the pedigree of this pup i» illuminating to students of breeding. Big Smoke, the sire, was by Omar—Black Velvet, by Electric Mao —Nell, by Dandy—* Bess. Electric Mac was by an Electrocute _ Zella Mac dog. Electric Mac was by Live Wire—Comedietta, while Zella Mao was by Lad’s Luck—Zona Mac.. Omar, 1 the sire- of Big- Smoke, was by Osterman—Lorraine,*' ’ % " Picardy—Hope Australia, by White Hope (imp.)—Gold* Drum. Osterman was by Jolly TarQueen Lizzie, by “Western Star —Wild Daisy, Jolly Tar being by Emperor—Britain’s Pride. Lady Diana was by Ringer —Belmont, by Osterman —Lorraine. Ringer, the sire of Lady Diana, was by . Diamond Blot—Lady Times, by Great Times (imp.)—Cherry Malotte (imp.). Great Times (imp.) being by Melksham Muggs—Baby Lon. Diamond Blot was by Paphian—Jewel Box, by Castle Isle—Lady Waisey, Paphian being by Mons—Silenf Wave.

The Early Days. Mr W. H. Bonayne owned the winner of the first stake ever held by the old Otago Metropolitan Club. This stake was for 32 greyhounds, all ages. The winner was a bitch named Camelia, by Bed Kail —Dauntless, by Battler —Bess, Bed Kail being by Cauld Kail—Teeswater. Camelia beat Mr W. G. Smith’s Smoker (DustyFairy Queen) in. the final. Camelia then started in the Awamoa Cup, being beaten in the second round by Mr T. Surman’s Waterloo, who was beaten in the semifinal by Mr W. M’Auley’a Hamlet, w|ip in the final was beaten by Mr T. Surman’s Gazelle. , The Awamoa Cup was for 32 all-aged o-reyhounds, the' property of members of the North Otago Club, at £5 5s each. The winner received £4O and a cup valued at£so, the gift of the club’s president, the Hon. Matthew Holmes; the second, dog £3O and a silver collar, the gift of Mr K. Richardson; two dogs at £ls each; winner* of two courses £7 each, and winners of one course £3 each. , . - , The first Cup stake ever held in Nelson was known as the Nelson Gold Cup. Stake. Eleven all-aged greyhounds competed, including four from .the kennels of Mr Harkness, whose fawn bitch L Esprit proved to be the winner, beating Mr Jary’s My Hope in the final. Of the four dogs trom the Harknes* kennels three reached the second round. Scandal being the only one defeated m the opening round. Two were defeated in the second round, Hard Lines by My Hope and Lady by Mr Harkness’s own dog, L’ Esprit. The latter, who was later owned by Messrs Saunders and Walker, wa» bred in the purple. ' Mr H. M’Donald’s Verbena won the Puppy Stakes in Southland in 1878, and his other good performer, Skip, was run* ner-up in the Southland Club’s Waterloo Stakes in the same year.' Besides winning the Southland Club’s Puppy Stakes Verbena was runner-up in the Otago Metropolitan Club’s Puppy Stakes to Mr Daniel a Scaldihgs. In the Southland Club s Puppy Stakes she beat Mr H. Howard» Austrian Briar. Skip bad his first placed performance at a Southland Club meeting, when he was beaten in the All-aged Stake final by Messrs Howard’s Austrian Briar. At. the same meeting Skip won a, special £5 match race from Mr M’Kenzie s Lady. Skip was runner-up in the Southland Club « Waterloo Stakes to Mr T. Surman’a Grvp. Mr ' Daniel’s Scaldings, winner of the Puppy Stakes held by tbs Otago Metropolitan Club, in which he defeated V«rbena, is of the same breeding as Verbena and Skip. Scaldings started in the first New Zealand Waterloo Cup, held by the North Otago Club. In this event he was beaten in the semi-final by Mr P. Masons Mechanic, who was defeated in the hnal bv Magic, owned by Mr H. Prince. Mr W. H. Porter’s red dog Prussian Emperor, who raced with success in 1878. was also bred in the purple. Russian Emperor won at his first start, this being in ttia Birthday Stakes at the opening nice ting of the Canterbury Club, when bo beat Mr W. G. Judge’s Butterfly .in the fina,,Butterfly was from the same stud matron as Russian Emperor. ■ 1 -. At the second meeting of the Canterbury Club Russian Emperor started in the Puppy Stakes. In this event he was beaten in tna semi-final by the stake winner, Cracksliot, owned by Mr E. W. Roper. Crackshot beat* Mr H. M‘Connell’s Sweep in the fina: In his only other start, in the Caiuerburv Ouo. he was beaten in the third round bv Mr Parker’s dog, Master Walter, after one /undecided course, Russian Emperor getting a severe shock when .he hit a fence in their first trial. Later in the dry, however, these two dogs were slippy m a no-decision course, and m this Russian Emperor showed marked superiority oicr Master Waller,
