The mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) left this morning for Wellington to attend a meeting of the National Provincial Council. He will return on Friday.

Messrs J, W. Munro, P. Neilson, and J. A. Roy, M.P.’s, and Hons. J. A. Hanan and T. F. Doyle (Bluff) were passengers by the through express today, being bound for Wellington. Mr C. W. Elliott left to-day on transfer to Wellington. Mr S. W. Caspar, national president of the A.5.1l S., left to-day for Wellington to attend a meeting of the National Superannuation Board. Mr J. J. Marlow travelled by the through express to-day on his way to Wellington to attend a meeting of the National Patriotic Council. Mr J. M‘G. Wilkie and Mr D. E. S. Mason (engineer to the Bluff Harbour Board) travelled by the through express to-day, en route to Wellington. At last night’s meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre, Lieutenant J. L. M'lndoe, who is with the First Echelon in Egypt, was re-elected patron, and it was decided to forward Mr M‘lndoe and other Otago swimmers with the First Echelon a cablegram, convoying the good wishes of the centre. Mr and Mrs Arthur Paape, have received a cable from their son, Mr A. M. Paape, who is serving with the Royal Air Force in Great Britain, stating that he is fit and well. Now promoted to flight-lieutenant, he left New Zealand to join the R.A.F. in May of last year, before the outbreak of war, and will celebrate his twenty-first birthday in April next. At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Football Association last evening, the chairman (Mr M. K. Haig), on behalf of members, presented a case of pipes to Captain E. J. Anderson, president of the association, who is leaving shortly to take up a military position. Mr Haig referred to the outstanding services rendered to the game by Captain Anderson, who for the past six years has occupied the president’s chair. He extended to him the association’s best wishes for his second military career. General Ballington Booth, whose death was recorded in a message from London yesterday, was a son of General William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army. At one time he commanded the Army in Australia, and was afterwards placed in charge of that body in the United States. in 1896, leaving the Array, he founded the Volunteers of America, a rereform, and benevolent organisation, of which he had since been general-in-chief and president. He gained distinction as a writer and public speaker. His wife, Mrs Maud Ballington Booth, who survives her husband, carried out extensive prison work in the United States. She served with the Y.M.C.A. in France and Germany during the World War. She was the author of several books. A Press Association cable from London states that the High Commissioner’s son, Pilot-officer W. .lordan, passed his Master of Arts examination at St. Andrew’s University. He obtained leave from the R.A.F. to sit for the examination.

Acting in an advisory capacity to the City Council on matters relating to the women's rest rooms in Princes and George streets and at the Gardens, Mrs W. A. Ross, and Mrs A. Herbert recently tendered their resignations to the Council. At last evening’s meeting of that body, the mayor intimated to Cr "Walls, when the latter mentioned the subject, that a letter of appreciation for their services had been sent to these two ladies.

Latest to register at the Excelsior Hotel are Mr S. White (Auckland), Mr Smutz-Kennecly (Wellington), Mr and Mrs J. H. M'Leod (Mandeville).
