TAIERI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

SPRING SHOW St Luke’s Hall, Mosgiel, presented a pleasing spectacle on Saturday on the occasion of the annual spring show of the Taieri Horticultural Society. Though the entries were not numerous, the show was a good one, and was conducted successfully by a competent working committee, with Mr J- F. M’Cartney at its head as president, and Miss M. Swallow as secretary. The proceeds of the show were in aid of Red Cross funds. In addition to the exhibits for competition, Mr Holland staged a fine collection of flowers for exhibition—freezias, boronias, primulas, and polyanthus. Mr Fountain (Dunedin) judged the flowers and vegetables. He said that cut flowers were well represented in that section,

and contained many well-grown seasonal flowers. Though the season was well advanced, tulips were well represented and true to colour. A feature of the show ; was some well-grown polyanthus primroses, both in dark and light shades. There were some excellent trusses in quality and size, and all that could be desired in that class. Owing to the lateness of the show, narcissi entries were not up to the usual standard. Miss Middleditch (Dunedin), who judged the decorative work, said that this was generally of a very high stanard. There were some excellent bowls and vases. The flowers were all of good quality. The exhibits of Miss M’Pherson were very artistic. In the children’s sections some promising work was shown. Miss E. Smollie (North Taieri), judge of the industrial section, regretted there were not more entries in the adult classes. What there was was of good quality. The children’s classes were particularly good, especially the frocks made by hand in Standards V. and VI. Mrs Gillan won the prize for the premier bloom in the show with a beautiful specimen of loeclsii narcissi. The two col-

lections of narcissi were won by Mrs K. Pilling. Miss M’Pherson secured the first prizes for best collection of spring flower* and for flowering shrubs.
