SHEARER SHORTAGE
AUSTRALIAN LABOUR LARGELY ABSENT APPEAL BY MINISTER [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, October 3. _A shortage of shearers in many parts of the Dominion may he experienced by the farming community this season, especially in the southern districts, said the Minister of National Service (Mr Semple) in a statement to-night. He added that ho had been giving the matter careful consideration, and he wished to appeal to all skilled men to co-operate this year and avoid delay m shearing operations. . The Minister pointed out that much of the shearing labour customarily available from Australia in past years would not be available this season in New Zealand, and he appealed to all who had shearing experience to assist wherever possible. Ho added that special arrangements were being made to ensure that skilled men wore not called up for military service during the season, and, moreover, co-opera-tion was being arranged through the State Placement Service so that shearing programmes could be fixed and loss of time on circuits avoided.
