JOTTINGS Answer to Correspondent. “ Wager.”—Silver Streak is by I’apep Money and Silver Ring by Silverado, Chido was by Paladin. Both Silver Ring and Chido were geldings. Reminders. To-morrow is an unusually important day for trainers and owners. Nominations for the New Zealand Trotting Cup close at 5 p.m. The first acceptances for the New Zealand Cup close at 5 p.m., and at the same hour nominations close for the Stewards’, Criterion, Fendalton, Jockey Club, Metropolitan, and Members’ Handicaps and Canterbury Cup (w.f.a). Acceptances for the first day of the Auckland spring meeting and forfeits for the Great Northern Guineas' and Welcome Stakes close at 5 p.m. Called Up. The well-known Wingatui trainer, D. J. M’Donald, has been called up in the first ballot. Looks Well. Silver Lilly, in Allan M'Donald's stable, was on the course this morning, and this M’Lean Stakes candidate certainly looks the part. Going Did Not Suit Seigmund. When Pearl of Asia won at Foxton last Saturday she had behind her at the finish four other New Zealand Cup candidates in Little Robin, Old Surrey, Colonel Bogey, and Seigmund. Little Robin is credited with having run a good race, but the track did not suit Seigmund, who ran badly. A Likely Hurdler. Combat, ridden by L. Robinson, gave a good exhibition of schooling over three hurdles at Wingatui this morning. He had more pace on than in his previous efforts and jumped well, getting into his stride again very smartly on landing. Swordstick and Petersham. Swordstick was withdrawn from the Kurow Cup because his owner considered him badly treated in having to concede Petersham 21b. In the Churchill Handicap weights Swordstick remains on the 8.7 mark, and Petersham (who finished third last Saturday) has been dropped to 8.4. Now in Didham’s Stable. Nightcalm, who is now a member of A. F. Didhara’s team, ran half a mile on the No. 1 track at Wingatui this morning in 50 3-ssec. Nigthcalm, who had a race at Geraldine last month, still looks on the big side, but is in splendid condition to commence serious work. Consideration Appreciated. Quite a number of the horses in training at Wingatui have been upset by the playing of the band in the early mornings. To meet the requests of the trainers the officer commanding has given instructions that the band will not play until after 9.30 each morning. Young Horses Gallop Fast. The tracks were fast at Riccarton on Tuesday morning, and several young horses were sprinted 'along the back in view of their engagements at Wingatui next week. Wild Fox ran half a mile in 48 4-ssec, and will be a starter in the Trial Handicap next Saturday week. The MT.can Stakes candidate, Full Pitch, had Great Flight as a companion over three furlongs, which they covered in 36 3-ssec. Full Pitch is an at-tractive-looking colt by Cricket Bat from Sailor’s Love. Riccarton Gallops. Royal Chief had Iceland Spar to bring him home over the last three of six furlongs at Riccarton on Tuesday, the time for the full journey being Imin 16sec and the last half-mile SOsec. Winning Rival and Shikari ran half a mile in 49 3-ssec, Lockit 50 3-ssec, Don’t Forget SOsec, and Doria was under strong restraint to record 54sec. Capricious ran a mile in Imin 56 4-ssec, the last half in 55 3-ssec. Passaform’s Chance. Judging by the strong finishing run he was putting in over the last furlong in the President’s Handicap at Orari, had Unit race been a mile and a-quarter instead of nine furlongs, Passaform would probably have beaten both Petersham and Swordstick instead of finishing a head behind the latter. Passaform carried 8.7 that day, Petersham 7.10, and Swordstick 7.11. In the Churchill Handicap Passaform will meet Petersham on 41b and Swordstick on 61b ‘ better terms, and if the sting is out of the going will be one of the hardest to beat. Little Work at Wingatui. There 'was very little interesting work ar. Wingatui this morning, though both the plough and No. 1 grass track were in fast and good order. Chatterbug, with a companion, ran five furlongs on No. 1 track in 66 2-ssec. Hoiho Tinopai and Point

Blank took 64 3-ssec for the same journey after running tbo first two well inside 24sec. Sir Amyas was going slightly better than Milton Abbas at the end of six furlongs in Imin 19scc, the first two taking 26 l-Sscc, and first three 38sec. Hanlon and Sir Hugh were sent seven furlongs, also on No. 1 track, and after running tho first half-mile in 51sec, covered tho full journey in Imin 32sec.

His First Win Over Hurdles. When Good Sun won tbo Paiaka Hack Hurdles at Poston last Saturday lie scored his first win as a hurdler, and his first success in a race for over two and a-half years. Good Sun did not appear to hold any chance of winning at tho homo turn, but at the last fence the leader, Great Fair, made a faulty jump, and in addition to losing his rider interfered with High Peer, War Lap, and Dorado, who were following. With a clear run on tho outside Good Sun, who was ridden by A. Jenkins, was able to head the leaders off and win. Good Sun is owned and trained by the veteran, J. N. Lowe, who many years ago was well known in Dunedin.

A Visit to the Guard Room. “ St. Clair ” found that tho Wingatui course is definitely under military control when he visited it this morning. Walking in through the motor car enclosure gate nothing was said to him until after he had passed through tho gate, then the sentry demanded his business. An explanation that he had gone out to see the horses gallop in no way satisfied the sentry, and “St. Clair’s ” intrusion into the military camp was then referred to the sergeant of tho guard, but that officer was also not impressed with the story, and, in charge of a lance-corporal; the intruder was marched to headquarters. Explanations followed, and all was well, tho incident helping to make up for a very uninteresting morning’s work in so far as training operations were concerned. Capricious. To bo still eligible to race among hacks and to have started 17 times last season without winning a race and then be made top-weigbt in the principal handicap at a metropolitan meeting is the fate of Capricious, who has not won a race since she scored in the Waihola Handicap at the Dunedin Cup Meeting in 1939. Since then Capricious has started 20 times for eight seconds and three thirds, her placings including seconds in the New Zealand and Dunedin Cups and a third in tho Metropolitan Handicap at the New Zealand Cup Meeting. Yet with 9-.0 to carry no one could accuse the Dunedin handicapper of having, been unduly severe on this Night Raid fnare in the race under notice. In most of her races last season Capricious was ridden by an apprentice to secure a reduction in the big imposts she had to carry. Now five years old, Capricious should be found ,a better marc than she was last season.

In New Zealand Cup. Pearl of Asia, a four-year-old full-sister to Tout le Monde, won the Carnarvan Handicap at Toxtou last Saturday in a most convincing manner, and is the first of tho North Island candidates for the New,Zealand Cup to score a win since the declaration of handicaps. This filly gave ft lot of promise as a two-year-old and was taken to Sydney in tho spring last season, but failed to strike form, and after an unsuccessful trip was turned out for a spell on her return to the Dominion. She recently ran second in a hack race at Awapuni, but failed again on the second day. However, she must have shown her trainer, T. R. George, some good track work in the interval, as she was well supported in Saturday’s race. After tailing the field for nearly a mile Peai'l of Asia put in a fine run round tho field and won attractively. She is on tho minimum in the Now Zealand Cup, and is an inmate of a stable that has turned out many good winners.
