AMATEUR WRESTLING

OTAGO TITLES • Amateur wrestling has been hard hit by enlistments with the fighting forces, and further defections caused by competitors entering camp for training with the Territorials resulted in smaller entries than usual for the Otago amateur wrestling championships which were decided in the association’s gymnasium in Princes street last night. Nevertheless, there were 16 entries, and the standard revealed by a number of tbe younger participants augurs well for the future. Another pleasing feature was the physical fitness of most of the contestants. The tournament was wrestled under Olympic rules, which provide that the competitor gaining a fall receives no bad points, while Ins opponent receives three had points. Where a bout is decided by tbe judges, the winner receives one bad point and his opponent three bad points. A competitor who accumulates five bad points is eliminated. The bouts were listed for one six and three three-minute rounds, but most of them were decided in fairiy quick time. L. Goughian won the'heavy-weight title by default, and R. Tourrell took the middleweight title similarly. The best-contested division was the welter-weight class, which was won by Harry Stevens, ono of the most experienced wrestlers taking part in the tournament. E. Treewick, the Alhambra Rugby forward, won the light-heavy-weight class, and before ho carried off the honours had to defeat his brother, J. Treewick. F.
