PRESBYTERY OF DUNEDIN
At last night’s meeting of the Presbytery of Dunedin the Rev. Dr Herrington stated that the Rev J. A. Thomson, of First Church, Invercargill, had been appointed chaplain to the Southland Regiment, at present camped in Forbury Park, for October. The Rev. Dr lan Fraser, of Wyndham, is to be chaplain for November. The Rev. N. E. Oakley is chaplain to the Field Artillery, now in camp at Wingatui, during October, and Rev. H. O. Bowman, of Maheno, to the Ist Otago Regiment at Burnham. Dr Herrington also stated that a brief devotional service would be held in the Queens’ Gardens prior to the departure of overseas units from the railway station. The Rev. C. M. Sullivan stated that the statistics of the within the Presbytery showed increases in every direction. The stipends of the ministers had been increased by £136, while the allowances for conveyance were up by £ll7. Givings to the mission funds of the church had increased by £966. The gross revenues of the congregations within the Presbytery had increased by £3,147. The Youth of the Church Committee reported that there wore 14 companies of the Girls’ Life Brigade in the Presbytery, and three more were likely, one of which was at Wakari, where the new Government settlement was rapidly filling up. A home Sunday schoo' worked by correspondence was being conducted, but not with the success it really merited.
