QUEEN CARNIVAL

BUSY WEEK-END AHEAD “ OLYMPIA " SPORTS MEETING AND GARDEN PARTY PARADE OF RESERVISTS FRIDAY NIGHT An extremely diversified programme has been drawm up in connection with the combined Army and Navy “ Olympia,” which will be presented at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday. Several of tho items aro of a burlesque or comedy nature, pride of place being given to the ladies’ Rugby match, for which basketball players ‘have issued a challenge to hockey players. Both teams have been training steadily. Good fun is promised in the hockey match in which members of the Southern football team are to play members of the Pirates team. Most of these have never played hockey, and this, together with tho fact that the players will be garbed jn women’s clothing, should provide bright entertainment. Rugby referees have been challenged to meet a women’s team at basketball, and this, too, should not be without its humour, as tho men endeavour to emerge triumphant from a game in which the women will be proficient. There will also be a suggestion of comedy in the relay race between the Army and Navy Queen Committees. The contestants will be dressed in the uniform of the service they represent. Among the more serious offerings will be a gymnastic display by Otago Boys’ High School pupils under Mr J. P. Northey’s direction, and a high standard of work is promised here. King’s High School boys will present something novel in the way of a tent erecting competition. Groups will show how tents should be erected, while comedy relief will be .provided by an awkward squad, who will show how this should not be done. Primary school athletics, open athletics, secondary schools events, and Rugby and Soccer relay races should strengthen a most interesting afternoon’s entertainment, which will be opened by a massed costume parade by 12 interhouse ladies’ sports teams. This parade will be led by the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band, and the salute will be taken by Queen Jessie and Queen Airini. The John M'Glashan Pipe Band and the Waverley Boys’ Band will be in attendance during the afternoon. SATURDAY’S NAVY PARTIES. Arrangements have now been completed for the running of a, bus service to Sir Percy Sargood’s residence, " Marinoto,” in Newington Avenue, on Saturday afternoon, when the Navy Queen garden party will be staged. Buses will leave Frederick street at intervals from 2 o’clock onward. Given fino weather, this party should be one of the most attractive of events yet held in connection with the carnival, and Sir Percy’s beautiful grounds will be dotted with numerous stalls, including side-shows, afternoon tea, sweets, 'produce, ice cream, and other accessories to such events.

Parents attending will find it convenient to leave their children at the Town Hall Concert Chamber, where the, children’s party is to he held. Many inquiries have been received concerning the baby show, in which £5 in prizes is being distributed, and it seems certain that this will he a highlight of the afternoon. An enticing programme of events for the children has been arranged. The cause of the Navy Queen has been considerably helped through the opening of the Navy Queen shop, 144 George street. A continuous stream of people passes through the doorway throughout the day, and the attractive display of prizes in the respective art unions has stimulated the sale of tickets materially. Both the Navy Queen (Miss Jessie M'Lennan) and the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt) will be present at the combined services sing to be held in the Strand Theatre on Friday. AUCTION SALE. For the big auction sale to be held by the Navy Queen Committee in the Winter Show buildings on Friday, October 18, donations of a most suitable nature are coming to hand freely. Among “ lots ” already received are many articles of furniture, including a complete bedroom suite, gramophone records, pot plants, glassware, and ornaments. This brief list will serve as an indication of articles eminently suitable, but anything of a saleable nature is sought, and it is hoped the public will continue to pour in donations. It is confidently anticipated that tliis will be the largest auction sale ever Held iii Dunedin, and goods will be disposed of regardless of reserve. CONCERT AT HIGHCLIFF. Some of Dunedin’s best talent will contribute to the concert programme to be offered in the Highcliff Hall tonight. The proceeds of the concert will be devoted to the Air Force Queen’s funds. The performers will include several singers, as well as instrumentalists and dancers. RESERVE BATTALION’S PARADE. On Friday night a full-dress parade of the National Reserve Battalion, under the command of Lieutenantcolonel M'Pherson. will be held through the city. The battalion, which comprises 600 men, will assemble at the Oval at 7.15 ami will march to the Octagon. The parade will pass a saluting base in the Octagon, where the mayor (.Mr A. H. Allen) will take the salute. ' The object of (lie parade is to give the men their first chance to parade in public and pay their respects to the mayor. It will

also enable them to take part in the Army Queen’s efforts to raise funds for patriotic purposes. A well-attended meeting was held yesterday of South Dunedin women who desire to assist the Army Queen in her campaign. An address was given by Mrs Dora Smeaton, of the Army Queen Central Committee, and it was decided to open an Army Queen shop next to M'Connell’s grocery shop on Friday afternoon between 2 and 4 o’clock. The shop will be open between those hours every Friday during the carnival, and an appeal is made for gifts of goods and produce.
