SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

[From' Oor Correspondent] BOWLING OPENING. The Balclutha Bowling Club opened the season on Saturday, but owing to the rain during the week, no play was indulged in. Mr M. Campbell, the president, referred to the improvements made during the off season. The deputy-mayor, Mr J. Copland, in declaring the green open, referred to the war, and said we in New Zealand were very fortunate to be away from the midst of the strife and turmoil. He expressed the hope that by the end of the bowling season we could again be at peace. He called on Mrs A. Hall to throw the “ jack.” and Mrs Campbell to roll the first bowl, which they did amidst applause. A meeting of the club followed, at which the matter of doing something towards assisting the patriotic appeal was discussed, and it was decided that it be left to members individually to make donations. FOOTBALL. The Clutha Football Club closed the season on Saturday, when a match, married v. single was played. The game resulted in a win for the single men after a very game. Proceeds were devoted to the Air Force Queen, and the effort resulted in over £7 being collected. At night the club held a very enjoyable smoke concert, during the course of which Mr T. Tsukigawa was presented with an electric reading lamp on the occasion of his recent marriage. On Friday night the Clutha Club entertained the third grade players at a tea, Mesdames L. M‘Lean and E. Michie were the hostesses, and during the progress of a happy evening, L. Blair was presented with the cup for the most improved player, and R. G. Wright and L. Grant (both of Clifton) were presented with initialled pocket wallets for most regular attendance at practice. 'Amongst those present were Rev. O. T. IBaragwanath (coach) and Mr E. Michie (manager). Last night members of the club attended church service at the Presbyterian Church. (Rev. Mr Baragwanath delivering an appropriate address. GOLF, A further round of the men’s knockout competition was plaved on the Balclutha links on Saturday, the results being: Grace heat Thompson, Robinson heat Marshall. Mathewson heat Dodds.

ready been donated to patriotic fund** with a prospect of more to follow. FOOTBALL ACCIDENT. During the course of the Married r. Single match at Balclutha on Saturday Mr D. Sutherland had the misfortune .to sustain a broken collarbone. Ha collided with an opposing player. Just previous to this he had won the ticket race, in which Mrs A. F. Greenall, Balclutha, won the prize, a full book of tickets on the £3,500 jiouse in the big Queen Carnival art union. Mr Sutherland was to leave for camp to-day. GARDEN PARTY. A very successful garden party in aid of the Air Force Queen funds was held on the South Otago High School grounds on Saturday. Owing’to tha dampness underfoot the function was held in the assembly room, Mrs G. N. Bell welcoming the visitors on behalf of the Red Cross Committee, under whose auspices the party was held. The High School girls gave a very interesting demonstration of verse speaking and Miss Pam Paterson danced a national dance. Mrs J. 6. Anderson and Mrs D. Brown played a pianoforte duet which was much enjoyed. Indoor bowls under the direction of Mrs G. Guest were played,-and generally the after* noon was enjoyable. TENNIS. The Balclutha Tennis dub opened the season on Saturday, there being & good attendance of members and visitors. . Mr W. R. Scott welcomed those present, and called on Mr E. Barnett to serve the first ball. Mrs A. Aitkea returning it. Afternon tea was sensed by the ladies, and a very enjoyahl* afternoon was spent.
